Christmas Crafts

I know it isn't even Halloween yet, but my thoughts have been on the upcoming Christmas Holidays.
Specifically, decorations for our home.
It may be because this will be the first Christmas we have spent in our new home.
Last year, we were blessed to be able to spend Christmas with my family in NC.
So, we did decorate the tree and put up a few lights, but nothing much more than that.
This year, I want it to be awesome for our children . Our youngest is 5.
Do you remember Christmas at 5?
Everything seems to be possible and filled with wonder and delight.
So, I have decided to start early.

The first item I have wanted to make was some type of Advent Calender.
I found a cute template for a stocking and went to work.
It required some sheets of felt, a needle and twine, baker's twine, a hole punch, buttons, card stock, glue,
and mini clothespins.

It took me about 3 days to sew all the stockings by hand.
(I don't have a sewing machine...it is on my list of wants to Santa for Christmas this year.)
I then sewed the buttons on , cut out the tags from left over card stock, punched a hole in the cards, tied the cards to the buttons using the baker's twine, cut out the numbers (well my Cricut did that) , glued them on each stocking, then attached them to some left over brown vine covered wire.

I think it turned out awesome.
I used the color scheme of our home for the stockings...so they are not your typical red and green.
I also use these colors when decorating the tree and the remainder of the home.
Now, I have to come up with 24 fun, and easy ideas for us to do each night as a family.

Don't worry, I took it down after I took the photos...but,
I can't wait!!

Have you started to think about Christmas or the Holidays yet?

Teacher Appreciation Week

Do you do teacher appreciation gifts?
My oldest is now in 7th grade so it's been a few years since I've actually made one.  All of his teacher's have been great ...it just seems the older they get, the more teachers they get...then the close student, mom, teacher relationships from elementary school just aren't there.
So, this year my youngest started Pre-K. She loves it and loves her teacher's too.
They did a great job and she has learned a lot. She can even sign the entire alphabet.
I started her in Pre-k mostly for the social aspects. I wanted her to learn to get along with other kids
and be able to learn to listen to her teacher, follow instructions, get used to a schedule,
get used to being away from us for the day, etc.
She will start kindergarten in the fall.  I feel much better about her starting school now.
She is super excited. So, to show my appreciation...I made them a little present for the classroom.

I also stopped by Tom Thumb and bought them each a Caramel covered Granny Smith apple.
I am very grateful to her teachers. Thank you Mrs. Kym and Mrs. Julie.
She loves school and learning because of your awesome influence.

Bar Stools ...

As you know, I have been trying to decorate our new home.
Lately, my item of need/want has been bar stools.
Have you priced bar stools lately?
Crazy expensive.
Below is the look I wanted...

Pottery Barn Isabella Bar stool
$179-$199 a piece.
Definitely not in my budget!

Next , I located these.

Wayfair.com

$149 for the pair
The price was much better... but I need three.
So, I would either be short a stool (if I bought one set), or
I would be over a stool (if I bought two).

You can then  understand my happiness when I found these on Craigslist.

$60 for all three.
They definitely need some work.
I am still deciding whether or not to paint them.
I thought for sure I would, but when we brought them home,
I saw how well they match the kitchen table.
So, now I am not sure.

The thing I don't like is that they don't "pop" enough as this color either.
Maybe I'll paint them and that will make the rush seating stand out (which is also the same color as the kitchen table.)
Decisions...Decisions.
Hope your week is AWESOME!!!

I Love my Husband...

“I am satisfied that happiness in marriage is not so much a matter of romance as it is an anxious concern for the comfort and well-being of one’s companion. Any man who will make his wife’s comfort his first concern will stay in love with her throughout their lives and through the eternity yet to come"

Gordon B Hinckley

I just had to say/post that out loud to the world...or at least to my little world here. On Wednesday, I started to feel like my allergies were acting up...you know itchy throat, runny nose, etc . I should have taken some medicine then, but I was out running around doing errands and just didn't stop to take it. I did take my Claritin D as soon as I returned home.
Well,  I woke up Thursday morning with a full blown allergy attack and went to see my doctor about getting a steroid shot. While there, I find out that I also have an ear infection and that they could not give me the shot because I just had one last month. So, they put me on an oral steroid, an antibiotic for the ear infection , and told me to continue to take my Claritin D.
So, I go home and start my medicines. I finally get some sleep Thursday night and start to feel a little better. I don't know what happened on Friday, but everything just got worse as the day went on. My sinus' were killing me., my chest hurt, and my ears were so clogged I could hardly hear anything. Also, I have been sleeping on the recliner in the living room these last few days, just to help me breathe easier. If I lay flat...forget it.
Flash, forward to 12:30 am Saturday morning... my throat was killing me. I made me some lemon zinger herbal tea with honey and that helped ...enough for me to fall asleep anyways. I then woke up at 4 am with the worse pain in my throat I have ever felt. It literally felt like someone had sliced my throat open from the inside. Even the smallest cough made me wince and cry in pain. (not to mention the stuff coming up with those coughs was soooooo gross!) I went and woke up my husband and said pitifully, "please help."
He sat right up and said, "I'm on it! What do you need?"
He then went straight to Wal-mart and got me everything I thought would make me feel better. He actually was upset that I hadn't woken him up sooner. When he got home around 4 :30 , he gave me my lemon slices (these feel so good on a sore throat), another fresh made cup of tea, some honey and lemon cough drops, and heated my hot water bottle up for me. Then he prayed for me and gave me a  Priesthood blessing.
He then came and sat with me and we watched several DVR'd episodes of The Big Bang Theory. Sheldon cracks us up.  Around 6 am I was ready to try to go back to sleep.  He then made sure I had everything I needed., took care of the dog (ran and fed her), and when I woke up again at 10 am... he had also entertained and fed the kids (so I could sleep as long as possible) , and then left to go grocery shopping for this week. I love how he helps me out and takes care of me. This is just one of the ways my husband is awesome. Thank you , Z. I love you!

Happy Valentine's Day!

Hope you have a wonderful valentine's Day and get to spend it with the people you love.

Here are the gifts my kids received for Valentine's Day.

Hubby bought me some Flowers and some Clinique make up.
I gave him a big bag of Peanut M&M's and also won him a video game he wanted from a contest.

Valentine (craft)

This week I made Valentines for my daughter's Pre-K class. I got part of the idea from a post on Pinterest. (Don't you just love that site?) I didn't want to focus on candy so, I focused on something else I know they like... which is coloring. I think they turned out pretty cute. They were also very easy to make.

First, I found this really cute Wilton mold tray at Wal-mart.

I then went through my daughter's huge box of broken crayons and peeled the wrappers off.

Next, I used a knife and chopped them into little pieces.
*The peeling and chopping are what took up the most time *
Finally, I put different pieces of crayon into each little form .

*Oh, I also covered the tray with non stick spray before filling with the crayon pieces*
I then put the tray on a pan and baked at 230 degrees for 15 minutes.
Once they had finished baking, I let them cool in the tray for about 10 minutes.
Here is what they look like after cooling. Pretty cute, Huh?

I then used my Cricut to cut out the shape of a heart.
Once they were finished, I used a stamp pad to make a "thumb" print on the heart.
I used a Sharpee to draw a face, arms and legs on the print.
I then wrote "(Thumb)body wants you to have a "colorful" Valentine's Day.

Finally, I put two of the Crayon people in a  plastic treat bag, tied it with a twist tie, then punched a hole through each heart, and used ribbon to tie the heart to the bag.  Voila!
Cute Valentine's Day card/gift without the candy.

*Now, all my daughter needs to do is sign each one. :) *

Here is the site which gave me half of my inspiration :
1. The (Thumb)body idea came from brownpaper--packages.com
So cute!!

Home Project..Wainscotting

Today we tackled the entry way of our home. I love wainscotting so we decided to give that a try. It turned out pretty nice even though we are not completely finished. Most of it is hung on the wall (which is what I meant by completed in the pictures...)but, we still have to caulk and paint it the same shade as the other trim work in the house. The pictures are from my phone...so I don't think they do it justice. So far I like it. What do you think? Have you done any home improvement projects recently?
